Kyle Chandler is putting a ring on it. The Friday Night Lights star has been cast as Green Lantern Hal Jordan for HBO’s superhero drama series, Lanterns.

Hal Jordan was introduced during the Silver Age of comics as the second Green Lantern (following the Golden Age’s Alan Scott). He was a former fighter pilot brimming with bravery, who was chosen to join the intergalactic law enforcers known as the Green Lantern Corps.

The Lanterns TV series is focused on two of the Corps’ heroes: Hal and John Stewart. In the show, Hal is considered one of the best members of the Green Lanterns and John is a recent recruit. The two Lanterns will be “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” per the official synopsis.

In addition to playing football coach Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights, Chandler is known for Super 8, Argo, and Manchester by the Sea. He was also in Mulholland Falls, Zero Dark Thirty, The Wolf of Wall Street, the Bloodline TV series, and Godzilla vs. Kong.

Lanterns is part of the connected DCU overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The mystery in Lanterns will continue in the first phase of the new DCU, titled Gods and Monsters. In a video presentation about the show, Gunn likened Lanterns to True Detective with space cops. He said that other Lanterns will appear in the show, but it will be centralized on Earth.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is serving as showrunner and executive producer of the eight-episode series. Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic creator Tom King (Batman) are also executive producing. Mundy, Lindelof, and King are writing the scripts for Lanterns.

The Gods and Monsters first phase of the new DCU will begin in December 2024 with the animated series Creature Commandos.
