Serving as scripter, layout artist, and cover artist, P. Craig Russell continues his powerful adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s interpretations of Norse mythology. The second issue of this third series from Dark Horse Comics sees “Hymir’s Fishing Expedition” illustrated by David Rubin, and the first part of “The Death of Balder” illustrated by Colleen Doran. As with the other issues in the series, there is also an evocative variant cover by David Mack.
The only failing in this series is that, since it is clearly intended to be collected, the endings of some of the stories deserve a “to be continued” tagged onto the bottom of the final page. It’s not like there’s not an ad on the next page, and it’s not like I personally won’t be coming back next issue anyway, but there’s always a chance that some reader will feel left in the lurch. On the other hand, when that’s the only complaint I can muster, it’s a darn good comic.
