Marvel Comics; $6.99

Roy Thomas, the writer who first brought Conan to comics in 1970, is teamed with artist Steve McNiven, while Kurt Busiek, who authored the deep dive on the barbarian when he was published by Dark Horse, is paired with artist Pete Woods to kick off this 50th anniversary celebration of Conan in comics. Three additional tales are brought to us by Chris Claremont and Roberto de la Torre, Kevin Eastman, and Steven S. DeKnight and Jesus Saiz.

What’s in this oversized, celebratory issue? The Thomas/McNiven collaboration is a prequel to the original Conan The Barbarian #1 (by Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith). Busiek and Woods conjure up an early encounter with sorcerous forces that will drastically affect Conan’s life. Claremont and de la Torre unveil a pivotal moment in Conan’s career. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Eastman writes and illustrates his first Marvel story. Daredevil showrunner-director DeKnight writes his first Marvel comic with art by Saiz.

Marvel said they wanted this to hit new fans and die-hard Conan enthusiasts alike, and they succeeded.
