Because COVID-19 has caused a major disruption in new comic books, for the next few weeks Scoop will reexamine issues, runs, trades, and titles that are already available. We’ll take a look at perennial classics, current titles we are enjoying, significant runs, and our overall favorite books to suggest some new reading material or inspire fellow comic fans to dust off the old favorites. And if you live near a comic shop that’s still open during this time, we hope our suggestions will prompt you to check out their back issue and collected edition inventory.

In 2018, the Hulk received a new starring series in Immortal Hulk. With Bruce Banner believed to be dead, both Bruce and the Hulk attempt to keep a low profile – which doesn’t work. He is confronted with opportunities to be heroic (that often go badly), catching the attention of a police detective and a reporter, followed by longstanding friends and enemies.

For his interpretation in Immortal Hulk, writer Al Ewing has taken a gothic literary approach to tell the story. The Incredible Hulk has always been a character of dual identities: the scientist and the savage, the monster and the tortured soul. This title portrays him as a character who despite a brutish exterior, has a well of emotion, à la Frankenstein’s Monster. The art focuses on the more frightening side of the Hulk with some intimidating and truly scary renderings of the powerful character.

Written with such eloquence and partnered with the dark, moody art, makes this a meaty entry for the Hulk and readers who want some pathos with the smashing.
