Tony Todd, the star of the Candyman horror series and much more, died on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. His manager announced that he passed away at his home. He was 69 years old.

Todd starred in the Candyman movie series as the spirit of a murdered man who kills anyone that says his name five times in front of a mirror. He starred in all three Candyman movies in the 1990s and had a cameo in the 2021 reboot. With his imposing height and deep, resonant voice, Todd became a favorite in horror and action movies.

He was born on December 4, 1954, in Washington, DC, and he grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. Todd attended the University of Connecticut, then studied acting at the Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute, the Hartman Conservatory, and the Trinity Repertory Company.

Throughout his career, Todd starred in nearly 250 movies and TV shows, starting with the Best Picture winning war drama, Platoon, in 1986. He was in an episode of 21 Jump Street, he starred in the jazz biopic, Bird, and was in Lean on Me. He did an episode of MacGyver, the TV movie Criminal Justice, and the Night of the Living Dead remake.

Todd played Kurn in a few episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine, he was Grange in The Crow, he did an episode of The X-Files, he was in The Rock, and he was in an episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Xena: Warrior Princess. He starred in Wishmaster, was Alpha Hirogen in Star Trek: Voyager, and he was in the Final Destination movie series as a mortician and expert in the rules of death.

In the 2000s, he was in episodes of Angel, Smallville, Charmed, and Stargate SG-1, and he played Reverend Zombie in the Hatchet movie franchise. He starred in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Man from Earth, he was in episodes of Boston Public and 24, he voiced Asteroth in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, voiced the Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and voiced Dreadwing in Transformers Prime.

Todd voiced Augustus Freeman in Young Justice, had a recurring role in The Young and the Restless, he was in Army of the Damned, he voiced Darkseid in Lego DC Super Heroes movies, and he was in Death House with several other horror icons. He voiced Scare Glow in Masters of the Universe: Revelation, he voiced Zoom in The Flash TV series, voiced Venom in the Spider-Man 2 video game, and he was recently in the horror movie Stream. Todd had several projects in the works at the time of his passing.
