X-Men ’97, the Marvel Animation series, is giving fans a deeper look into the Emmy nominated first season with the “making of” book, X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series.
The show is an homage to the beloved 1990s cartoon, X-Men: The Animated Series, while also breaking new creative ground. In this iteration, the X-Men team of Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Beast, Jean Grey, Jubilee, Sunspot, and Morph, are led by new team leader Magneto.
X-Men ’97: The Art and Making of the Animated Series features storyboards, character sketches, vehicle designs, a look at the new costumes, as well as stills, animatic frames, and cells, plus more. The behind the scenes book takes fans through the show’s design process to the animation stage to finally production.
It is written by James Fields (The Art of The Batman) and contains a foreword by executive producer Brad Winderbaum, the Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios. The 224-page hardcover book from Abrams Books retails for $50 and will be released on April 29, 2025.
“This is the first X-Men title produced by Marvel Studios,” Winderbaum said. “What an amazing first step to reintroduce audiences to the X-Men with a look at one of the most pinnacle eras of the X-Men comics, which was the ‘90s. That Iconic style that has its roots in Chris Claremont, and is celebrated in Jim Lee, and then again in The Animated Series.”
X-Men ’97 welcomed back multiple actors who voiced characters in the original series. That includes Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Chris Potter as Gambit, and Catherine Disher (original Jean Grey voice actress in a new role as Dr. Valerie Cooper).
The cast also includes Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey (who she voiced in the X-Men miniseries), Ray Chase as Cyclops, J.P. Karliak as Morph, A.J. LoCascio as Gambit, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, and Ross Marquand as Professor X.
The first season of X-Men ’97 is now streaming on Disney+. It has already been renewed for a second and third season.
