It’s no secret that Marvel, especially the X-Men, have introduced some of the most incredible powerhouse women around. But just how familiar are you with one especially butt-kicking purple-haired heroine?

Originally created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe, Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock made her first appearance in Captain Britain #8 (December 1976). Initially, Braddock was merely a supporting character to her twin brother, Captain Britain. However given her telekinesis, telepathy, precognition, psychic katana and knife as well as considerable martial arts skills; it was clear she was much more than a supporting role.

Between 1976 and 1986, Braddock’s character underwent many changes, from a career as a charter pilot, a professional model, to working for the government organization S.T.R.I.K.E. It was during the 1986 relaunch of Captain Britain, that the character suffered a major change. While standing in for her brother, Braddock is subsequently blinded by supervillain, Slaymaster.

Unfortunately, the trouble for Braddock only increased from there. In New Mutants Annual #2, Braddock was abducted into the Mojoverse and subjected to brainwashing before being fitted with bionic eyes. It was during this time that Braddock was referred to as Psylocke for the first time by Mojo and Spiral.

Thankfully, Psylocke is later rescued by the New Mutants, who are being led by Magneto at the time. Psylocke went on to unofficially aid the team for some time. It wasn’t until Psylocke distracted Sabretooth in a fight, that she was officially invited to join the X-Men.
