Promotion for Alien: Romulus has become far more immersive and frightening due to new marketing stunts. First the facehuggers, aka the baby aliens, invaded the movie’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con. Their next move was to prowl the streets of New York City.

Recently, the residents of New York were surprised to see people lying on sidewalks and staircases or slumped against walls and street signs, convulsing with facehuggers attached to their heads. The DiscussingFilm’s X account posted a video montage of the marketing, which ends with one guy suffering the moment when a Xenomorph bursts through his chest.

Alien: Romulus shares similarities with the original movie, following a group of space colonizers scavenging an abandoned space station. They soon learn why the station is uninhabited when they become prey to the universe’s most dangerous predators.

The movie stars Cailee Spaeny (Civil War), David Jonsson (Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Isabela Merced (The Last of Us), Spike Fearn (Aftersun), and newcomer Aileen Wu. It is directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead), who co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues (Don’t Breathe 2), and original Alien director Ridley Scott is a producer on the film.

Alien: Romulus will premiere in theaters on August 16, 2024.
