Deadpool & Wolverine is saying “bye, bye, bye” to another box office record. The superhero film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular superhero duo is now the highest grossing R-rated film of all time.
After just two weeks in theaters, it is up to $395 million at the domestic box office. This beat the 20-year record for an R-rated film held by The Passion of the Christ, which had a theatrical run of $370 million. Deadpool now holds two of the top three spots, as the third highest grossing R-rated film is Deadpool, with a total of $363 million.
The movie brought in $97 million during its second weekend, giving it the eighth biggest second weekend ever, beating Barbie’s $93 million. It also had the fifth biggest second weekend for a Marvel movie, which was previously held by Spider-Man: No Way Home, at $84 million.
In addition to these records, Deadpool & Wolverine appears on track to reach the $1 billion mark. Outside of the US, it grossed $110 million in week two for an international total of $428 million. Collectively, it’s worldwide total is now up to $824 million.
Deadpool & Wolverine has also passed both its original film and sequel for box office gross. Deadpool had a lifetime global total of $782 million while Deadpool 2 reached $785 million.
The long-awaited third movie in the franchise paired Deadpool’s quippy, raunchy humor and fourth wall breaks with Wolverine’s gruff and grumpy demeanor. In the film, Deadpool recruits Wolverine to help him save his world, and along the way they meet several other characters from the 20th Century Fox Marvel movies.
Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie also stars Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, and Deadpool franchise stars Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Rob Delaney, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Stefan Kapicic, and Lewis Tan.
