Walter Whitney is a New York City journalist writing for the Blue Ribbon Gazette. When he’s tasked with interviewing Valerie Smith of the Pussycats, Walter is put in a violent situation. This encounter inspires his vivid imagination to create the vigilante alter ego Bob Phantom, but is he actually being a hero or imaging everything?
This one-shot by James III is one part fantasy versus reality and one part critique of modern journalism. Walter is frustrated by the clickbait fluff he’s tasked with writing and the way rumors and opinions are reported as facts. At the same time, he’s kind of a boring guy who fantasizes about being more.
It’s a surreal story that could certainly go farther than a one-shot comic.
