The last issue of Basilisk took a few turns, among which that Barret and the other disciples have an agenda beyond following Vanessa’s orders. While he was busy kidnapping Hannah, Vanessa has been revisiting her past to learn more about the Chimera and how she became such a powerful being.

Chess pieces are moving into place and scores are looking to be settled in Basilisk. Vanessa, Regan, and their brothers and sister were the most dangerous predators for most of the comic, but things are getting much more complicated now. Cullen Bunn is doing a great job at expanding the story with new threats, more history to enrich the characters, and even a little sympathy for the devils.

The horror doesn’t take a backseat with a few pages of nasty revenge by artist Jonas Scharf and colorist Alex Guimarães. The next issue is billed as “the final confrontation,” so chances are, they’ll bring some visceral work to Basilisk #12.
