Nocterra #1

The world has gone dark and it’s been filled with monsters. That’s what has happened in Nocterra. The comic starts by introducing Val and Emory Riggs, a set of adopted siblings who were just kids when the sky darkened. But that wasn’t the only problem. Soon after, monsters started showing up and things got much worse.
Flash forward 13 years and now Val operates as a Ferryman, call sign Sundog, who drives a big rig between well-lit sanctuary outposts. She ferries people, presumably also cargo, through the terrifying dark wastelands and the monsters, known as shades, who live there.
One issue in and Nocterra is already really good. But that isn’t much of a surprise since it’s produced by the creative team of Scott Snyder, Tony S. Daniel, and Tomeu Morey. It’s fantasy and horror with a little bit of science fiction. The pace is quick and there’s suspense, but the dialogue and exposition give the book enough meat to keep it from being a quick read. The art is clean and beautifully detailed to paint a clear picture of this new world and its threats.
Nocterra is off to a great start.
