Going into Devil’s Highway #1, I wasn’t particularly familiar with the work of writer Ben Percy (Wolverine) or artist Brent Schoonover (Batman ’66), but after reading this first of five issues the chances are that’s going to change. The set-up for this mini-series is both familiar and gripping. An average person in an average situation suddenly has mayhem injected into his or her life. The resulting death draws in law enforcement and someone else, an x-factor. It’s how the action is portrayed and how compelling this x-factor is that makes the difference between “been there/done that” and “Oh, this is interesting.”

And oh, this one is definitely interesting.

Here’s their description: “A young woman with a dark family secret embarks on a quest to hunt down the serial killer that brutally murdered her father – only to discover he is just one piece of a national network of evil that snakes across the country and hides in plain sight.”

Sounds like it could be pretty cool and the first issue is very promising. It would be awesome if the rest of the mini-series lives up to the promise.

We’ll see how it goes.
