Every year the Academy Awards recognizes great achievements in film. Oscars are given across a wide range of categories that praises the work in front of and behind the camera. Starting in 2027 during the 100th Academy Awards, the Academy will honor the work in stunts with the creation of the Achievement in Stunt Design category.

“Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking,” Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang said. “We are proud to honor the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”

Stunt performers and creators have been calling for a stunt category for years, pointing out that stunts are used in every kind of film from dramatic fare to the biggest blockbusters. The creation of this category means that superhero movies, action flicks, science fiction and fantasy adventures, and other exciting films will be honored by the Academy in a new way.

The Academy will announce the rules for the category in 2027.

Prior to this announcement, the last new category was for the Achievement in Casting which was announced in 2024 and will be given for films released in 2025.
