Action Figure Prototypes Presented in Hake’s Auction
On Tuesday, March 4, 2025, Hake’s Premier Auction #243 opened bidding on 1,449 lots of pop culture and historical material. Once again, the toy section is packed with rare, desirable items, including a selection of action figure prototypes.
There are multiple Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pieces, such as a Giant Size Slam Dunkin’ Don hand-painted hardcopy prototype. The 14-1/2” tall Playmates figure is jointed as the final production figure would be and capitalizes on the popularity of NBA star Michael Jordan, with Donatello wearing a red and white jersey and sporting the number “23.” It is one of only five known larger scale Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles prototypes.
Hake’s also has the Sewer Sports All-Stars TMNT Slam Dunkin’ Don hand-painted hardcopy prototype, which is the smaller version of the figure. The 4-1/2” tall figure features the same overall design as the finished product, just lacking the peg in Donatello’s palm that was used to hold the basketball.
The auction includes four Mego Star Trek Aliens prototype test shots. The figures obtained from a former Mego designer are one of a kind early test shots that were used in promotional photography to sell the line. The 8” tall Romulan has a few difference from the finished product, such as a non-Vac-Metallized helmet, black pirate style boots, and a vinyl attached belt. The 8” Andorian differs from the final version with die-cut diamonds on the tunic, different style brown boots and gloves, and different size diamond on the belt. The 8” Mugato face, horn, hands, feet, dots, and the tunic have apparent hand-painted color differences. The 6-3/4” Talos has a completely different costume than the finished product with a two-piece yellow suit with gold trim at the bottom.
A group of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom unpainted hardcopy prototype LJN figures are offered in this auction. The completed line only included three figures, with a few other figures planned but never produced. Hake’s has the unpainted resin prototypes of Indy, Mola Ram, and Giant Thuggee with their accessories. They also have four prototypes of unproduced figures, including Indiana Jones with a different head, Willie Scott, and two different versions of Short Round.
More action figure prototypes in the auction are the TMNT Mike Sewer Surfer Series 4 unpainted hardcopy and Make My Day Leo Series 5 wax sculpt with mold set and proof card, Toy Biz Rogue Series 7 2-up hardcopy and Iron Man 2-up hardcopy paint master prototype, Mego Happy Days Joanie Cunningham test shot for the unproduced figure, and more.
Hake’s Auction #243 is open for bidding at hakes.com, and will run until Tuesday and Wednesday, March 25-26.
