Aquaman #39 continues the “Sink Atlantis” crossover event with Task Force X, the Suicide Squad. In the last issue of Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller sent her team to Atlantis to sink it back into the sea during Queen Mera’s coronation. An Atlantean defector gave them access, not knowing that the method for sinking the city was tantamount to a nuclear bomb.

Aquaman, who feels responsible for their current situation, is checking security in the hope of keeping Queen Mera and the city safe. As the Suicide Squad fights amongst themselves, as they are wont to do, Aquaman and the Atlanteans discover their presence and manage to capture a few members. There’s still the matter of a catastrophic device, how to handle the attack, and a newly crowned queen who doesn’t like being out of the loop.

This issue by Dan Abnett was an entertaining mashup with the Suicide Squad. Aquaman and the residents of Atlantis are a regal sort, so putting them up against a band of violent screwups was fairly comical. Aquaman is still dealing with the aftermath of Dark Nights: Metal, but the isolation isn’t helping their current situation. Perhaps we’ll see a cool fight between Aquaman and Killer Croc in the next installment.
