Ash Williams is back! And so is the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, a/k/a The Book of the Dead, an ancient Sumerian text bound in human flesh. Yuck.

At the request of his friend Joanne, Ash is investigating the Necronomicon which has reappeared in a high school, of all places. Now our groovy man Ash has to pose as a high school teacher in order to investigate teenagers that may be messing with The Book of the Dead. Yeah, Ash is in a classroom in charge of a bunch of teens. This’ll be good.

Chris Sims and Chad Bowers wrote a great debut issue. The story is a bit fun and scary, as The Evil Dead should be, but there are also very clever jokes in the dialogue. The issue moves quickly while providing good groundwork for upcoming issues and Ash is his typical self – a funny, loveable jerk.

The art by Mauro Vargas and colors by Triona Farrell are comical partners to the writing. As with the dialogue, there are a few nice jokes nestled in the issue. While Vargas’ style isn’t extremely realistic, the likeness of Bruce Campbell is unmistakable and some of the exaggerated expressions make the issue even funnier.
