Beth Chapel, the Second Doctor Mid-Nite
Beth Chapel was a medical doctor whose ability to help people expanded greatly when she became the second Doctor Mid-Nite (renamed Doctor Midnight). Like the original, she can see in the dark and uses blackout bombs and other gadgets to blind her opponents, in addition to her medical skills. A creation of Roy Thomas and Todd McFarlane, she was introduced in Infinity Inc. #19 (October 1985), then she debuted as Doctor Midnight two issues later in Infinity Inc. #21 (December 1985).
She entered the world of superheroes when she healed Infinity Inc.’s Jade after the hero had been afflicted by the cyanide touch of Mister Bones. During Crisis on Infinite Earths, Beth was blinded by an explosion and was saved by Hourman’s son, Rick Tyler. Dr. McNider performed surgery on Beth’s eyes and though he wasn’t able to completely restore her sight, he did give her the power to see in the dark.
Beth, with her new abilities, and Rick, with his father’s Miraclo, became the new Doctor Midnight and Hourman. They, and the new Wildcat, joined Infinity, Inc. It proved to be a short-lived team-up, however Beth and Rick did engage in a romantic relationship during that time.
The US government recruited Doctor Midnight, Wildcat, and others to stop Eclipso, but it was a disastrous campaign. Doctor Midnight, Wildcat, Peacemaker, Commander Steel, Major Victory, and the Creeper all died while fighting the powerful villain.
Like many other comic characters, her demise didn’t last. Doctor Manhattan revived Beth, the rest of the Justice Society, and the Legion of Super-Heroes in the Doomsday Clock event. Once she returned, Beth opened the All-Star Clinic, a medical facility specifically designed to help metahumans.
