Big News Out of Star Wars Celebration
On April 18-20, 2025, Star Wars Celebration was held at the Makuhari Messe Convention Center near Tokyo, Japan. Many announcements were made for upcoming films, returning TV series, and new shows. They revealed new cast members, returning guest stars, teaser footage, and more.
The Andor season two stars, including Deigo Luna, and creator Tony Gilroy teased what’s to come in the upcoming season. It will take place over a period of four years with three-episode blocks representing one year of time. Luna called it “big in every possible way” and suggested that viewers watch Rogue One once they finish the new season, saying that they’ll see it in a different light. They also talked about the scale of season two, which will have 140 different sets, 150 creatures, 30 droids, and 700 costumes for the principal characters. The first three episodes premiere on Disney+ on April 22.
One of the biggest announcements from the convention was that Sigourney Weaver is joining the Star Wars universe. Lucasfilm revealed that she will play a mysterious figure in The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will see the popular TV characters jumping to the big screen for their first feature film. At Celebration, footage showed Weaver’s character in an X-wing jumpsuit and she is rumored to be playing a person in authority, possibly an officer in the New Republic Defense Fleet. If that is the character she’s playing, it suggests that Din Djarin will be involved with the New Republic in some capacity. The movie is set for release on May 22, 2026.
Darth Maul is back! The Sith is returning to lead the new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Set after the Clone Wars, Maul will travel to a planet out of the Empire’s reach where he will try to reconstruct his crime syndicate. Sam Witwer, who voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, is also back to voice the Sith. It is currently in production and will arrive on Disney+ in 2026.
Another big star is joining the galaxy far, far away. Ryan Gosling is set to star in Star Wars: Starfighter, a standalone film set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. It will be directed by Shawn Levy and the script was written by Jonathan Tropper (The Adam Project). This will be the first movie set after the Skywalker Saga, which concluded in 2019. Starfighter is set to premiere in theaters on May 28, 2027.
Hayden Christensen confirmed that he will return as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka season two. Christensen appeared in the first season in flashbacks showing the period when Ahsoka was his Jedi apprentice. Showrunner Dave Filoni shared that Lars Mikkelsen, Eman Esfandi, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are all back for season two. Rory McCann (the Hound in Game of Thrones) is stepping into the role of Baylan Skoll, which was originally played by the late Ray Stevenson.
Before the show ended, they announced that the next Star Wars Celebration will be held on April 1-4, 2027, in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
