Cover by George Pérez

Title: “The Evil Eight”
Synopsis:
Frequent appearances by superheroes bring the New England town of Fairfax to the attention of “the Master” and his minions.

Writer: Marv Wolfman
Penciler:
Carmine Infantiono
Inker: Dennis Jensen, Frank Chiaramonte and Larry Mahlstedt

Review: The “Dial ‘H’ for Hero” concept has always been rich with potential, but the creative team of Marv Wolfman and Carmine Infantino do little to develop it here. The biggest problem is with characterization, which is hard to develop with this title’s rotating cast of alter egos. The script also seems geared to a slightly younger audience than your average DC book; it feels “dumbed down.” The rotating inkers – one per chapter – give this issue an interesting look, with Dennis Jensen’s detailed linework fairing the best. But nothing in the book’s interior lives up to the excellent George Pérez cover.

Grade: C+

Cool factor: The “Dial ‘H’ for Hero” concept, especially for younger readers. And the George Pérez cover, of course.

Notable: Ronald Reagan cameo.

Character quotable: “Gosh, I’m glad we’re in this together.” – Vicki Grant, dialed up as Hyptella
