Meet Berzerker, an immortal killing machine. He can survive seemingly any injury and is attracted to violence in the most brutal ways. But he’s missing some important information – like how and why he is still alive, where his abilities came from, and how his life could end. That’s when he makes a deal with the US government to execute missions too dangerous for regular soldiers if they’ll study him to answer those questions.
BRZRKR is the brainchild of actor Keanu Reeves, which he co-writes with Matt Kindt. The violence is brutal and does a great job of illustrating what this man is capable of when let loose. Despite being completely jaded by his actions, one moment unlocks something inside of him that finally provides a puzzle piece to his past.
Artist Ron Garney and colorist Bill Crabtree took the violence to another level in this book. It’s definitely a mature read with ghastly visuals and even some shocking levels of gore. The character bears a striking resemblance to Reeves as his John Wick, which is even easier to picture since he’s also a one man army.
The book gives the impression that Berzerker has nothing but darkness and emptiness inside of him, so it’ll be interesting to see if that is proven wrong as the limited series continues.
