The Hellmouth event is over and the bookis taking a short reprieve from Sunnydale to travel to Jamaica. Set before the current story, Kendra is training with her watcher Zabuto and guardian Aunt Vea in case she is one day called to be the slayer. Part of their exercise is investigating a sudden rise in tourists who are being sired as vampires.

This story by Jordie Bellaire presents some much needed background on Kendra, where she came from, and why she behaves the way she does. Very different from Buffy, Kendra prefers to be a loner to focus on the mission, which is pushed on her very hard by her no nonsense watcher. It was a good start to this fresh arc, stripping away some of the complexities that were established in the previous storyline.
