Bumblebee’s “Titanic” Impact
The Teen Titans have had a number of unique members since the team’s founding, but few leave their opponents with quite the sting like Karen Beecher. The scientist made her debut as the girlfriend of the Herald, Mal Duncan, in 1976, and her initial run-in with the Teen Titans wasn’t exactly friendly.
The yellow and black striped suit was first seen in an altercation with the Titans, as Beecher attacked the team in an effort to make her boyfriend look better. She managed to escape without the plot being discovered, and she eventually joined the team as Bumblebee a few issues later. Her powers were an asset to the Teen Titans, as her suit – which is solar-powered – allows her to fly via insect-like wings, fire sonic force blasts, and “sting” enemies electrically.
Karen eventually married Mal Duncan and together the pair worked alongside the West Coast team in San Francisco. After being blasted with a Zeta Beam Ray, most of her body mass was transferred to Hawkgirl, leaving Bumblebee standing at just six inches tall, while Hawkgirl towered at 25 feet; this led to the somewhat humorous situation of Bumblebee living in a dollhouse for a while.
Bumblebee has been one of the more popular supporting characters for the Teen Titans. She appeared often in the successful 2003-2006 Teen Titans cartoon series, and more recently has been seen on Teen Titans Go!, Young Justice, and DC Super Hero Girls. She has been in multiple Teen Titans animated films, as well as in Justice League: Gods and Monsters and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.
