San Diego Comic-Con returns to the San Diego Convention Center next week on July 20-23, 2023. Throughout the weekend, Gemstone Publishing will participate in multiple panels on comic creation and journalism.

“How to Get News Coverage” is on Thursday, July 20 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM in room 10. What makes the difference between getting news coverage and opportunities for a project and being left behind? A lot of publishers may have great ideas and work to share but do not know what to submit to press, how to submit it, or why they are overlooked for coverage. Rik Offenberger (First Comics News, G-Man Comics) moderates this panel of comic journalists who will tell you what they are looking for in your submission. Panelists include Ed Catto (Agendae, Pop Culture Squad, Captain Action), Tim Chizmar (Fangoria, co-chair of the Horror Writers Association, First Comics News), Michael Kingston (Headlocked Comics, BOOM! Studios), Alexander Raymond (Monstar Public Relations), Rob Salkowitz (ICv2, Forbes), Francis Sky (First Comics News, Massacre Twins), J.C. Vaughn (Overstreet), and Josh Waldrop (Ultima Digital Media).

The “Lost Comic Book Universes” panel is on Thursday from 5 PM to 6 PM in room 28DE. Atlas-Seaboard. Original Milestone. CrossGen. Original Valiant. MLJ/Archie. The Ultraverse. Marvel’s New Universe. Future Comics. Comics’ Greatest World. DEFIANT. The THUNDER Agents. Join former Malibu publisher Dave Olbrich, Archie historian and journalist Rik Offenberger, Ultraverse co-founder Tom Mason, and moderator J.C. Vaughn (Overstreet) for a spirited discussion of comic book universes that have come and gone and sometimes come again.

“Adapting Famous Books & TV for Comics” is scheduled for Friday, July 21 from 5 PM to 6 PM in the Omni Grand Ballroom DE, 4th floor. Film, TV, and comics writers Mark Haynes (Stargate Universe, Battlestar Galactica), J.C. Vaughn (24, Stargate Atlantis), David Avallone (Elvira, Doc Savage), Christopher Sequeira (Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes), and Steven Peros (Dracula, The Time Machine) discuss and answer your questions about adapting famous novels, iconic characters, and hit TV shows to comics and graphic novels.

“That ‘90s Panel: Comics’ Most Important Decade” is on Friday at 7 PM to 8 PM in room 28DE. The 1990s was an important decade in comics, including X-Men selling over eight million copies in 1991, Image Comics was launched, Marvel’s bankruptcy, and DC bought Wildstorm in ’99. Malibu Comics’ Dave Olbrich, Chris Ulm, and Tom Mason (from Geekview Tavern) plus panelists Kevin VanHook (Visi8, Valiant Comics), Bill Schanes (formerly of Diamond Comics), Brian Cunningham (Wizard magazine, AfterShock Comics), Larry Houston (producer, X-Men: The Animated Series), J.C. Vaughn (Overstreet), and Matt Hawkins (Image Comics, TopCow) will discuss this pivotal point in comics history.

“Licensed: Overstreet’s Licensed Comics” takes place on Saturday, July 22 from 1 PM to 2 PM in room 28DE. From Uncle Scrooge to the Power Rangers, and from Planet of the Apes to Star Wars, licensed comics are a vibrant part of the fan experience and the comics industry. Join David Avallone (Elvira), Chris Ryall (Rom), Andy Mangels (Wonder Woman ’77 Meets The Bionic Woman), Mark L. Haynes (Stargate Universe), Tom Mason (former Malibu Creative Director), Ed Catto (Captain Action), and moderator J.C. Vaughn (Overstreet) for a foray into the world of licensed comics.

“The Mighty Crusaders” panel is on Saturday from 3 PM to 4 PM in room 9. In 1940 MLJ Comics (what would become Archie Comics), published Pep Comics #1 and created the first patriotic superhero, The Shield. They would go on to create superheroes like the Black Hood, Comet, Hangman, Jaguar, and others, collectively known as the Mighty Crusaders. These heroes’ stories have been reprinted around the world, and have been appeared on the radio, in film, and in pulps. The presentation on the 80-year history of Archie Universe superheroes will be moderated by Rik Offenberger (MLJ Companion) with panelists Dean Haspiel (The Fox), Andrew Pepoy (Archie Comics), Bobby Ragland (AC Comics), J.C. Vaughn (Overstreet), and some surprise guests.
