What makes the best comic book covers? It is a great topic for debate. For us, as individuals, there is no wrong answer, of course; it is purely subjective. But, with a little thought it’s possible to explain what it is about a particular image that grabs you. The best images are the ones that make you stop and check out something you weren’t previously planning to purchase – and in some cases, you even end up picking up a title you’ve never even heard of before.
In 1938, two young Jewish men from Cleveland, Ohio, created America’s most popular (and most powerful) fictional immigrant son – a new kind of hero from the stars who debuted within the pages of Action Comics #1. Their “Superman” didn’t just use his mighty powers to capture the hearts of readers everywhere, he and his story also led the way for a new type of comic book genre that would be coined the “superhero” title.
As a symbol of American virtue, the Man of Steel joined other mystery men in promoting the Allies’ good fight against the Axis powers. There are many covers showcasing this that were created by Golden Age artists drawing under the National Periodicals banner for what was touted as the “World’s Largest Selling Comic Magazine!” This anniversary issue from 1978 – Action Comics #484 – finds the original Metropolis Marvel (now living on Earth-2) marrying his longtime sweetheart, Lois Lane. And what a wedding it is!
All clichés aside, this comic book is a super collectible among fans around the planet. Special adventures of “Supes” like this one are wanted among the most dedicated collectors, who will pay almost anything for them. So, if you find this comic book in a yard sale or an auction house, and its price is within your budget, don’t hesitate. You’ll be sorry!
