In the late 1980s, Cypress Hill burst onto the hip hop scene, gaining a huge following of fans and becoming influential figures in the West Coast hip hop style. Now, the group has joined forces with Z2 on a graphic novel that celebrates their seminal album, Black Sunday, and the band’s impact on the musical genre.

Cypress Hill: Black Sunday “immerses you deep in the vibe and historic cultural events that surrounded Cypress Hill as they brought Black Sunday to life,” per the press release. The graphic novel was developed with the band, and features a new interview with the group, who reflect on Black Sunday and how it pushed them to stardom. It follows their goal of delivering a second album that lived up to their debut release, with a backdrop of the LA riots, their time a Lollapalooza, and touring with the Beastie Boys.

“We called it Black Sunday because we’re Raiders fans and also Black Sabbath fans. So, Black Sunday felt like an appropriate title for the album. We tried to match the imagery up with what we were putting down musically,” B-Real said.

Cypress Hill: Black Sunday is written by Noah Callahan-Bever and Gabriel Alvarez, and features art by Ken Knudsten, Sebastian Piriz, Giorgio Pontrelli, Felix Ruiz, and Guillermo Sanno. Original album cover designer Jay Papke provided the cover for the graphic novel and was interviewed about his process in creating the original cover art.

In addition to the comic, Z2 is selling the exclusive vinyl, Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall. The record includes the entire concert that Cypress Hill played with the London Symphony Orchestra during a special show at the Royal Albert Hall. limited to 500 copies, the exclusive green vinyl is available with the Platinum Signed Bundle.

Cypress Hill: Black Sunday is now open for preorders at Z2Comics.com and will arrive in stores on June 3, 2025.
