As Deadpool & Wolverine continues breaking records at the box office, Heritage is looking to set their own record for the Merc with a Mouth. The auction house is offering for sale Rob Liefeld’s original cover art for New Mutants #98, featuring the introduction of Deadpool.
The book isn’t in an auction, however, it is listed on their website for sale with an asking price of $7.5 million. If it sells at that price, the cover will become the highest selling piece of original comic art ever sold.
The owner of the cover purchased it nearly 20 years ago, and has been approached with many offers to buy it ever since. Given Deadpool & Wolverine’s success, the original art owner reached out to Heritage about selling the book.
New Mutants #98 arrived in comic shops in December 1990, introducing Deadpool as a character who was hired to kill Cable by the latter’s estranged son. From the start, Deadpool was brash and quippy, and would soon gain fans for his attitude, sense of humor, and signature fourth wall breaks.
In his first cover appearance, Deadpool appears front and center in a full body image (down to the feet). He is surrounded by other iconic characters from the title, including Cable, Domino, and Gideon.
“I’ve long admired – and coveted – this work, which I consider the most important piece of comic book art from the 1990s,” Heritage Co-Chairman Jim Halperin said. “I’m thrilled we’re now able to offer it to someone who, like me, admires Rob Liefeld and adores his Deadpool, who is among the most beloved characters in comics and, now, the MCU.”
