Because COVID-19 has caused a major disruption in new comic books, for the next few weeks Scoop will reexamine issues, runs, trades, and titles that are already available. We’ll take a look at perennial classics, current titles we are enjoying, significant runs, and our overall favorite books to suggest some new reading material or inspire fellow comic fans to dust off the old favorites. And if you live near a comic shop that’s still open during this time, we hope our suggestions will prompt you to check out their back issue and collected edition inventory.

Dr. Stone Vol. 1
Viz Media; $9.99

After all of humanity is petrified following an event in which a strange green light totally envelops the earth, one extremely smart high schooler wakes up thousands of years in the future. The genius intellect of Senku has cracked through the stone that he’s been encased in and has started to rebuild society on his own, using only his wits to survive. From stone tools and simple huts to full-blown science labs, Senku is the Earth’s only hope to rebuild.

There’s so much to love about this series, especially the kind of real world science they’re doing throughout the story (though don’t try it at home), and all the book smarts are balanced out by plenty of action and a lot of humor. This has become one of my favorite series in the last year and I can’t possibly recommend it enough.
