Heritage’s Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction is filling out nicely with many impressive offerings. Those highlights include Spider-Woman’s debut cover, Iron Man’s first appearance, Saga of Swamp Thing original art, Detective Comics #1, and the final issue of All Winners Comics.

“None of us can remember an auction that was so deep with stellar examples spanning all time periods and collecting interests,” Heritage Executive Vice President Todd Hignite said. “The entire world of comic art is well represented, from rare early art and first appearances to the best in newer works by all the greatest artists.”

Joining this lineup is Frank Frazetta’s Spider-Man painting – but not the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. The painting depicts a nearly naked muscular man fighting a giant arachnid whose red and green insides spill onto the water surface. The sword and sorcery master created the painting for the 1967 paperback cover of Night Walk.

The spider lots continue with Spider-Woman’s first cover appearance on Gil Kane’s Marvel Spotlights #32 original cover. A creation of Archie Goodwin and Marie Severin, Spider-Woman appears at the top of the cover lunging at Nick Fury because she was brainwashed by Hydra to kill him.

Another important introductory moment at Marvel is Don Heck’s Tales of Suspense #39 page 7 – the page that introduced Iron Man. It shows imprisoned Professor Yinsen buying time to let Tony power up the Iron Man suit so that he can escape.

The DC offerings include Tom Yeates’ Saga of the Swamp Thing #21 cover from the issue in which Alan Moore retconned the character. The cover harkens back to Swamp Thing’s origins as he moves into the foreground, menacing a frightened man in the background.

Jack Kirby and Bill Everett’s Thor #171 art features the God of Thunder fighting Wrecker over the Manhattan skyline. There’s a selection of Watchmen Book Three pages by Dave Gibbons that feature Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Dr. Manhattan. The Incredible Hulk #144 cover by Herb Trimpe and John Severin shows Hulk fighting Dr. Doom.

Comic book highlights include The Incredible Hulk #1 CGC 9.0 (first appearance of Hulk) and #181 CGC 9.8 (Wolverine’s introduction), All Winners Comics #21 CGC 9.8 (final appearance of the All-Winner Squad), Detective Comics #1 CGC 6.5 (first issue of the title that would introduce Batman), and X-Men #1 CGC 9.0 (introducing Charles Xavier, Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Beast, Iceman, Angel, and Magneto).
