This is the first of four parts in the reimagining of the 1984 short story collection, “His 9 Lives.” The original story was turned into a television special a few years later, but three decades after its original debut, it seems appropriate to bring the classic story into the 21st Century.

The issue contains “Cave Cat,” illustrated by David DeGrand, and “King Cat,” illustrated by K. Lynn Smith. These different art styles help to better differentiate the stories from each other and from the meta-story, but does so in a way that isn’t jarring to the eye. This classic Garfield tale is always a winner, and the new look at it does a great job.
