The heroes and villains of Star Wars are battling it out in Hake’s Auction #242. Nearly 250 lots of Star Wars action figures, vehicles, playsets, and more are now open for bidding in the premier event. Prototypes, foreign issue pieces, highly coveted toys, rarities, and more are offered in the auction.

The original trilogy’s most popular bounty hunter kicks things off with the Boba Fett rocket-firing prototype (L-slot) AFA 85. The figure was originally made for the 1979 Kenner toy line, however the rocket-firing capability was deemed a choking hazard and the figure was dropped. The only examples available are in prototype form, and that number is further limited because many were damaged while Kenner ran safety tests on them. With several of the already finite number in rough condition due to those tests, higher graded examples like this one have become among the most sought after Star Wars figures.

The Empire Strikes Back Princess Leia Organa 12” Series unproduced prototype doll in the Bespin gown is another extremely rare piece. Kenner planned to make four 12” Series dolls for their Empire Strikes Back line, but sales on the previous 12” dolls had not been as successful as they had hoped, so the line was scraped. For the Leia doll, Kenner used the 1978 stock body then hand-painted the head and updated her hairstyle to match how it appears in the Bespin scenes, and her outfit is hand-crafted. Only a handful of these prototypes were produced by Kenner and they rarely come to market.

Rarities continue with the Glasslite Star Wars: Droids Vlix AFA 80, which is the single highest graded example. The figure was only released in Brazil because the animated series was cancelled, making this the rarest of all Star Wars figures that were commercially released. This is one of just 12 graded by AFA.

The Jawa 12-back-A AFA 85 vinyl cape variety is the rare version that was available before the cape was changed to cloth. This example of the 2-1/4” figure is packaged on an unpunched card.

The loose Hong Kong Empire Strikes Back Han Solo (Bespin outfit) first shot AFA 80 has a black torso, white arms, and a peach head. It is incredibly rare to find any prototypes from this line as only a handful of Empire Strikes Back character first shots were made in non-production color. Less than 20 non-production color first shots are known for all Kenner toys produced from 1978 to 1985.

Hake’s has Empire Strikes Back 12” Series box flats for Han Solo (Hoth outfit) AFA 80 and Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2) AFA 75+. There are salesman’s samples of an Empire Strikes Back Walrus Man card with Bib Fortuna (white cape) AFA 70 and a Return of the Jedi Squid Head card with Wicket W. Warrick 65-back-A AFA 80. Vehicles include an X-Wing Fighter AFA 75 and Imperial TIE Fighter AFA 80.

Action figure highlights continue with a Luke Skywalker 12-back-A AFA 85 (blonde hair), Power of the Force Anakin Skywalker 92-back AFA 70 and Yak Face 92-back AFA 80 (Kenner Canada), and Star Wars: Droids Boba Fett AFA 70+. More key pieces are the Empire Strikes Back six-pack of figures AFA 75 (yellow background), Return of the Jedi Imperial TIE Fighter Pilot (Savas Pilotu) Uzay Turkish AFA Qualified 50, and Return of the Jedi Darth Vader Collector’s Case gold prototype first shot AFA 80+.

Hake’s Auction #242 is packed with 2,067 lots of historical and pop culture memorabilia. Bidding is open at hakes.com until Tuesday and Wednesday, November 19-20, 2024.
