Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is filling multiple staff appointments. HBO has confirmed the first wave of cast members for the Harry Potter TV series, focusing on professors and other staffers at the magical school.

HBO confirmed that John Lithgow is starring as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer (Ozark) will play Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) has the role of Severus Snape, and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) will portray Rubeus Hagrid. It had been previously reported that all four actors were in talks to star in the show.

Casting news also included Luke Thallon (Leopoldstadt) as Quirinus Quirrell and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) as Argus Filch.

“We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life,” executive producers Francesa Gardiner and Mark Mylod said.

The three biggest roles of Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger, and Ron Weasley have not been announced yet. Filming is expected to begin in the summer of 2025, so it is likely that these roles will be announced soon.

The adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book series will explore “every corner of the wizarding world,” per the official description. It is written by Gardiner who is also the showrunner with Mylod set to direct multiple episodes. Executive producers also include Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts for Brontë Film and TV and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
