The Horizon Experiment comic series from creator Pornsak Pichetshote is being collected into a first volume in April 2025. The series contains five pilot one-shots featuring stories about a diverse group of protagonists inspired by pop culture icons like James Bond, John Constantine, and Indiana Jones.

The Horizon Experiment is me and some of the most talented people I know seeing what’s possible,” Pichetshote wrote in The Horizon Experiment, Vol. 1 introduction. “Five one-shots co-edited by one of the best editors in comics, Will Dennis, all released monthly and designed to act as pilots for follow-up books if sales merit. Everyone was given the same challenge: Create a protagonist from a marginalized background set in a popular genre where if the background of that protagonist changed, so would your story.”

The series began with The Horizon Experiment: The Manchurian by Pichetshote and artists Rachel and Terry Dodson, telling a James Bond-inspired thriller style story of a Chinese super spy.

The Horizon Experiment: The Sacred Damned introduced Professor of Ethnography and the Occult Inayah Jibril in a tale about a Muslim exorcist. Written by Sabir Pirzada (Dandelion) and artist Michael Walsh (Exquisite Corpses), the story takes inspiration from Dracula to John Constantine.

In Tananarive Due and Kelsey Ramsay’s The Horizon Experiment: Moon Dogs, a family of Black lycanthropes of East African descent get pulled into a war in Miami. Their involvement threatens to reveal that werewolves are real.

J. Holtham and Michael Lee Harris’ The Horizon Experiment: Motherf*ckin’ Monsters is an Evil Dead-inspired story about a nerdy Black kid from Brooklyn and his friends. They unintentionally discover a group of frat boys who are worshiping a demon to take over the world.

The Horizon Experiment: Finders/Keepers by Vita Ayala and Skylar Patridge is a reverse Indiana Jones story. It stars Puerto Rican archelogy grad student Ines Guarua who plans to steal a cultural artifact from a museum and bring it back home to the island.

The Horizon Experiment, Vol. 1 will be in comic shops on Wednesday, April 16.
