Though this issue of Howard the Duck isn’t really focused that much on Howard himself, it clearly carries some major implications for what’s about to happen to him. In the first Howard series from earlier in 2015, he got kidnapped by The Collector, and managed to escape along with Rocket Raccoon. The Collector, not being a huge fan of things going missing, has been hunting him down ever since; he also created female counterparts for him and Rocket, named Linda and Shocket, and it is these two characters that get most of the plot in this issue.

Despite only being introduced to Linda and Shocket in this story, the audience is treated to an emotional wallop throughout the book. We are made to care about them and their fate in a very short amount of time – a testament to both the writing and art in this issue.

For a slightly more light-hearted fare, the “Gwen-Pool” side story also continues in the back of this book. She and Howard have to take down Hydra, because in typical Deadpool-ish fashion, this iteration of Gwen made some choice mistakes.

In any case, Howard the Duck continues to be a standout series for Marvel, and with the second volume starting to hit its stride, there’s no better time to get started on it.
