As a scientist and supernatural being, John Jonah Jameson III has a special connection with the moon. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, he was introduced in The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (March 1963) as an astronaut, and later became the Man-Wolf under the creative team of Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas.

A New York City native, John is an accomplished astronaut and the son of Daily Bugle publisher John Jonah Jameson Jr. While on a mission, John was infected with spores that imbued him with superstrength. Capitalizing on his son’s new powers, the elder Jameson sent him out to stop Spider-Man who was supposedly robbing a bank (really, he was saving the bank from a bomb). Spidey and John tangled until the superhero was able to neutralize the astronaut and stop the spores from affecting him.

Things changed for John again when he went on a mission to the moon and found an other dimensional ruby known as the Godstone. The ruby attached itself to his throat, was activated by the moon, and turned him into Man-Wolf. Once he returned to Earth, Man-Wolf fought Spider-Man until the Web-Crawler removed the stone. Then Morbius, reattached the ruby to John so that he could use Man-Wolf in his pursuit of finding a cure to his condition.

In a later adventure, John ended up in the Other Realm dimension, where he learned that the ruby had been created by a dying Stargod to transfer his powers. He also learned of the ruby’s more potent effect in Other Realm. While on Earth, Man-Wolf would transfer to the form of a beast, but in Other Realm he fully transformed and could retain his human intelligence and ability to speak.

For a time, he became the new Stargod and acted as Other Realm’s champion. Once he returned to Earth, John lost his memory of being Stargod and reverted back the bestial form of Man-Wolf. He underwent a procedure to destroy the Godstone and returned to normal – for a time.
