Soul and R&B singer Angie Stone, known for her hit single “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” died on Saturday, March 1, 2025, during a traffic accident. Stone and her band were in a cargo van that flipped over and was then hit by a big rig truck in Montgomery, Alabama. Everyone else in the vehicle survived. Stone was 63 years old.

Stone was born Angela Brown on December 18, 1961, in Columbia, South Carolina where she started singing at church. When she was 16, she joined Cheryl Cook and Gwendolyn Chisolm to form the hip hop group, Sequence. They released the hit song, “Funk You Up” in 1979 and three albums through the early 1980s.

In the mid-1990s, Stone joined the trio, Vertical Hold, and they released the albums, A Matter of Time and Head First. She recorded an album with the group Devox, and sang backing vocals for Lenny Kravitz’s on his album, 5. Stone co-wrote D’Angelo’s song “Jonz in My Bonz” for his debut album, and she co-wrote four more songs for him on a later album. They were in a relationship in the ‘90s and had a son together.

Her debut solo album, Black Diamond, came out in 1999, reaching Top 10 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip Hop chart and her single, “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” was a No. 1 hit on the Adult R&B charts. Stone’s second album, Mahogany Soul, featured the song “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” which reached No. 4 on the charts. She went on to release several more solo albums through 2023.

Stone appeared in The Hot Chick, wrote the theme song for the sitcom Girlfriends, and she played Big Mama Morton in Chicago on Broadway.
