Shawna Trpcic, the costume designer behind The Mandalorian and other Star Wars TV series, died on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. Her daughter Sarah reported that Trpcic died suddenly of unknown causes. She was 56 years old.
In addition to serving as the costume designer on The Mandalorian, Trpcic worked on The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. She was nominated for three Emmys for her work on those shows.
“Her creativity brought this world to life. She will be deeply missed both as a friend and as a colleague,” The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau said.
Trpcic was born on October 18, 1966 in Artesia, California, and became an artist in high school. She studied fashion at the Otis College of Art and Design, and her career as a costume designer began in 1990 on Mom.
She was the assistant costume designer on the Robin Williams-starring Toys, costume illustrator on What Lies Beneath, and assistant costume designer on The Core and This is the End.
As a costume designer, Trpcic worked on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Firefly, Angel, Dollhouse, Torchwood, The Cabin in the Woods, Powers, Much Ado About Nothing, Second Chance, and Another Period.
Outside of her design work, Trpcic volunteered at a juvenile hall and taught art at a men’s maximum security prison in Northern California.
