As the creator of Namor, the Sub-Mariner, Bill Everett (1917-1973) was responsible for one of Timely Comics’ three main characters (the other two were Captain America and The Human Torch). Namor was likely the first very successful antihero in the comic book world, since he was nearly constantly at war with the surface-dwelling humans. Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 featured the character’s first appearance, which was then expanded for Marvel Comics #1. He wrote and drew the character in a number of different titles for the publisher both before and after his service in World War II.

During the 1950s, he illustrated Marvel Boy, Venus and the first appearance of Simon Garth, The Zombie, among other work. Timely had become Atlas and then Marvel Comics when he illustrated the first issue of Daredevil. His last lengthy work in comics was a 1972-1973 run on his original character, Sub-Mariner.
