Archie Comics; $3.99

The “New Riverdale” line for Archie Comics is continuing to expand, this time with a group of ladies who prefer long tails, and ears for hats. This debut issue for the newest version of Josie and the Pussycats looks at the formation of the band, as Josie quickly goes from a solo act to the frontwoman of the group. Along the way she has to deal with the meddling ways of none other than Alexandra, and her perseverance propels the band quickly into potential stardom.

As a debut issue, Josie and the Pussycats #1 is pretty solid. It does move very quickly – as Josie goes from a no-name solo act in an empty bar to the leader of a band about to get signed to a record deal in the span of about 24 hours, which is stretching reality just a bit too much for my taste – but beyond that, it’s really solid. It’s setting up for some good drama and is a good way to break into Archie’s “New Riverdale” brand for those who haven’t already been keeping up with it.
