The only thing hotter than the temperature in July 2024, were the trailers previewing highly anticipated movies and TV shows. From the beginning of the month through San Diego Comic-Con releases, studios dropped big trailers for comic book-based projects and similar genres.

The Umbrella Academy

The fourth and final season of Umbrella Academy picks up after the Hargreeves siblings were separated when their timeline was reset after what happened at the Hotel Oblivion. Each of them tries to create new lives for themselves since their powers are gone, but the threat to the world tugs at their heroic instincts. In the trailer Dr. Gene Thibedeau (Nick Offerman) declares that the deceased Ben Hargreeves is “the key to understanding all the timelines.” In this timeline, their father (Colm Feore) is alive and running an evil business empire, and there’s a group called The Keepers who are convinced that their reality is a lie. These obstacles and looming threats bring the Hargreeves siblings back together for one last time. The Umbrella Academy season four premiered on Netflix on August 8, 2024.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The trailer for The Rings of Power season two begins by showing how the rings can tempt their wearers, and the dwarf Durin IV (Owain Arthur) warns that a powerful, ancient evil has returned. A new fellowship is formed with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) who prepare to fight an army of orcs, though the pair disagree over Galadriel wearing one of the rings. Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) comes across a figure bathed in golden light, which is revealed to be Sauron pretending to be an elf with gifts to give. The trailer also has shots of Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) shooting arrows, a great eagle landing by Pharazon (Trystan Gravelle), Adar (Sam Hazeldine) leading an army of orcs, and the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) casting magic. It will start streaming on Amazon Prime on August 29, 2024.

Agatha All Along

A spinoff of WandaVision, the teaser for Agatha All Along starts in a similar vein with the titular character living a fictitious life. At first Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) appears to be a homicide detective, until the false veneer falls, and Agatha reclaims her real self. Once she reclaims her true identity, Agatha seeks to regain the power that Wanda Maximoff took from her, and build a new coven. She plans to “walk the witches road” despite being told that it is a death wish. The teaser also features flashes of a demonic looking creature (or witch), fist fighting, broom flying action, bees expelled from someone’s mouth, and a person who appears to be possessed by malevolent forces. The first two episodes will debut on Disney+ on September 18, 2024.

The Penguin

A spinoff of Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie, The Penguin follows Oz Cobb on his mission to become the ruler of Gotham’s underworld. The trailer starts with Oz (Colin Farrell) talking about how the American dream should be that honest people should succeed, but the world doesn’t work that way. As he makes a pitch to lead Gotham, the trailer features a scene from Sofia Falcone’s (Cristin Milioti) violent history. Oz is warned about going up against Sofia, and he reveals to Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz) that he plans to take control of the drug trade. The series premieres on HBO and Max on September 19, 2024.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol trailer shows Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) onscreen together for the first time since the original series ended in 2022. It starts with Daryl admitting, “I don’t know if this is the place where I’m supposed to be.” Then we see a determined Carol who is ready to jump in a plane and fly across the ocean to find her friend. As she makes the dangerous journey to France, Daryl talks to Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) about returning to the US. The trailer features the Louvre in ruins, Daryl being held captive, and Carol being attacked by walkers in camouflage. Daryl takes out a group of soldiers, Carol starts questioning people for his location, and it ends with a brief shot of Carol finally finding him. It debuts on AMC on September 29, 2024.

Joker: Folie à Deux

The trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux starts with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) unable to suppress laughter in the back of a police car while radio commentators discuss his status, with some considering him a martyr while others call him a monster. At Arkham Asylum, he meets Harleen Quinzel (Lady Gaga) and is quickly taken with the equally unhinged patient. As their love grows, so does their madness, and the pair inspire anarchy in the streets of Gotham. This is taken a step further with musical numbers, and Arthur – in full Joker makeup – violently defending himself in court. It will arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024.

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance

The trailer for Wynonna Earp: Vengeance gets viewers reacquainted with Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano) and Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) who literally rode off into the sunset when the original TV series ended. The heroes are called home by newly married Waverly Earp (Dom Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell) when a dangerous new villain makes herself known. It teases some throwbacks, including the fast-moving revenants, the tentacle goo, and what appear to be reapers. The trailer, which also features Greg Lawson as former sheriff Randy Nedley and Dani Kind as rich girl turned vampire Mercedes, ends with a tongue in cheek joke about their predicament feeling like a reboot. The movie will debut on Tubi in the fall of 2024.

Captain America: Brave New World

It’s serious business from the start when Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is welcomed to the White House to meet with President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford stepping into the role after William Hurt’s death). Ross acknowledges their disagreements in the past before telling Sam that he wants to “make Captain America an official military position.” Sam immediately questions what will happen if they disagree on how to handle conflicts in the future. Enter the conflict, which starts with Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) apparently taking a shot at the president. Upon investigation, Captain America learns that an enemy has infiltrated the president’s inner circle. Lots of action and character introductions follow, including the White House being attacked. Ross tells Sam that he isn’t Steve Rogers, and Sam agrees before taking flight in his new red, white, and blue wings. The trailer ends with a brief glimpse at the Red Hulk’s introduction. Captain America: Brave New World arrives in theaters in February 2025.

The Walking Dead: Dead City

The first trailer for The Walking Dead: Dead City season two opens with a voiceover from Dama (Lisa Emery) claiming that “The old world was rigged. Designed to rip us apart.” Cut to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), looking like his old Savior self, in a leather jacket and carrying a barbwire wrapped baseball bat. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) acknowledges that she knows what it means to return to Manhattan, and when Armstrong (Gaius Charles) asks why she wants to save Negan, she tells him that “It’s different now.” Then Maggie sees Negan looking the way he did when he killed Glenn, and the teaser ends with the two in a tense faceoff. Season two premieres on AMC sometime in 2025.
