The Lanterns TV show has cast Boardwalk Empire star Kelly Macdonald as a series regular. She joins previously announced leads Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, who are playing Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart, respectively.
The series takes place when new Green Lantern recruit John and veteran Green Lantern Hal work together to investigate a murder. Macdonald will play Sheriff Kerry, who is described as “a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface.”
Macdonald is returning to HBO where she was nominated for an Emmy for her work on Boardwalk Empire. She won an Emmy for the TV movie The Girl in the Café, and is also known for Gosford Park, No Country for Old Men, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Black Mirror, and she recently starred in The Radleys.
Lanterns is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new connected DCU. The mystery in Lanterns will continue into the first phase of their connected movies and TV shows, titled Gods and Monsters.
Though the show will be based on Earth, Gunn confirmed that other Lanterns will appear in the series. He also likened the murder mystery to True Detective, but with space cops. The eight-episode series is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King.
