Kit Carter: Planet Doom

Empire Comics; crowdfunded
If you know writer-artist Aaron Lopresti’s work, maybe it’s from Planet Hulk, X-Men, Ms. Marvel, Wonder Woman, or Justice League. Or maybe, like me, you’ve been a fan of his work since Sludge in the days of Malibu’s Ultraverse. Whether it’s from any of those projects or even if you weren’t familiar with his work previously, what he’s been doing in the crowdfunded arena should make you stop and take notice.
His two Wraith of God one-shots have been gritty, compelling tales, ones I’ve been happy to back, but they in no way prepare the reader for his latest original graphic novel, Kit Carter: Planet Doom.
Wide open action, wise cracks, beautiful women, imposing threats, dastardly villains, and Merv the Astro Chimp populate the story. It’s an over-the-top, high budget version of a 1950s science fiction B-movie, and it’s a page turner. For all the seriousness of Wraith of God, Lopresti goes in almost the opposite direction with this one.
The story, script, and pencils by Lopresti, inks by Matt Ryan, and colors by Kelsey Shannon take full advantage of the solid production values. They made me happy I backed the hardcover edition, though I suspect those who got the softcover will be just as happy as I am.
