Making Dark Magic with Morgaine le Fey
Morgaine le Fey is a DC villainess with a long history as an ancient sorceress from Arthurian times. She was introduced by Jack Kirby in The Demon #1 (September 1972) as a descendant from the Elder Folk who survived the fall of Atlantis (along with her sisters Nimue Inwudu, the future Madame Xanadu, and Vivienne, the Lady of the Lake). Unlike her sister Nimue who is kind to the humans they encounter, Morgaine treats them as beings beneath her.
Being a magic user amongst non-magical humans, Morgaine spent centuries using people for her own gain. She decided that she wanted Uther Pendragon, the High King of Britain, to be her lover, but he rejected her because his heart was set on Igraine, who was married to Duke Gorlois of Cornwall. Hoping to foil any budding relationship between the two, Morgaine used a glamour to impersonate Igraine’s daughter and the slight got her exiled from the Elder Folk. After Flashpoint, Morgaine’s continuity was changed so that she and Nimue were actually Igraine’s daughters and latter was now a Fae.
During the age of Camelot, she considered her half-brother King Arthur to be her enemy for taking her birthright and becoming a ruler. Throughout his reign she tried to take the throne and destroy Camelot. With her powers growing, Merlin merged Etrigan, his demon familiar, with Jason Blood to create a being capable of stopping Morgaine. From that point on they were enemies.
Eventually Camelot did fall and Morgaine continued practicing magic for centuries on a never-ending quest for more power. In the 20th century, Merlin had returned and tricked Morgaine, stealing her youth and beauty. Desperate to restore her youth, she sought a way to Merlin’s tomb where she hoped to use his magic to become young again. But, Etrigan continued to fight against her to protect Merlin’s magic and the world from her machinations.
