Mantiques: A Manly Guide to Cool Stuff
Krause Publications; $26.99
Eric Bradley, who puts together the annual Antique Trader Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide, is out with a new book that offers a distinctly different take on collectibles. Mantiques: A Manly Guide to Cool Stuff documents a relatively new area of collecting that concentrates on the cool factor, eye appeal and sensibility of the items rather all the details that most of us get wrapped up in. This book won’t be replacing any price guides – it’s not intended to – but it does serve as a primer for various approaches to modern collecting for the guy who has everything (or who at least wants to look like he does).
Through a selection of more than 400 full-color photographs, Bradley surveys collectors and a diverse cross section of collecting, spotlighting cool, rare vintage pieces in each of them. From movie posters to surfboards, vintage tools to vintage video games, and from Patek Philippe watches to rare guitars, Bradley provides a succinct look at each area the book covers.
It’s hard to describe precisely why this book works, but there’s no denying that it does. It’s appealing, engaging, and a lot of fun.
