Though this is the final issue in this tie-in miniseries to the popular Cartoon Network show, it’s chronologically a prequel to the events of the show. Over the Garden Wall #4 gives insight to the plight of the woodsman, which begins when he loses his daughter. The issue is actually narrated by the daughter, who tells of her family’s life out in the countryside before their involvement with the Beast.
Of all of the mysteries in Over the Garden Wall, the relationship between the Beast and the woodsman is easily one of its greatest enigmas. Though the most somber of the stories this miniseries has told, issue #4 might be the best. This issue stands on its own, but the miniseries as a whole has been a joy to read and has filled in many of the gaps left in the space between the show’s episodes.
