RETRO REVIEW: Deathmask #4 & 5
Future Comics; $5 each
Although the graphic novel Colony, which Future Comics released through IDW Publishing in 2012, was billed as the last work of artist Dick Giordano, it fell a bit short of the mark in the story department. So I was delighted to find out that two of the previously unpublished issues of Future Comics’ Deathmask – previously only available digitally – were available as nicely produced print-on-demand comics.
Deathmask, with his mask and flowing coat, was tailor-made for Giordano’s amazing pencils. The character and his stories featured a blend of regular people, mysticism, and over-the-top action, all of which were easily mastered and combined with solid storytelling by Giordano.
He and writer David Michelinie definitely complemented each other with their efforts on this one.
Every once and while, it’s great to be reminded of what a true, old school professional can do.
The existence of these comics is something every collector of any “dead universe” looks forward to: more. That said, coming to the end of them and realizing that once again there aren’t anymore coming in the pipeline, it’s just as sad as when Future Comics stopped publishing originally. So much potential…
