RETRO REVIEW: Near Death – Volume 2

Image Comics; $14.99
In its second volume, Jay Faerber and Simone Gugliemini’s Near Death makes a smooth transition from the longer origin story of the first volume to a more episodic, issue by issue approach in this one. It does so without losing sight of its core story, which is the former hitman, Markham, out to redeem himself by saving people instead of killing them.
As this collection of Near Death #6-11 opens. Markham has relocated to Los Angeles, and his successes have reached the ears of the wealthy and well-connected. As his quest to balance the scales against his previous bad deeds continues, his understanding that redemption might not just be a question of numbers deepens.
Compelling writing and art deliver readers another great journey. As with the first volume, I can recommend picking up the individual issues for the wonderful text pages, but you can’t go wrong with the trade paperback either.
