RETRO REVIEW: The Marvels Project

Marvel Comics; $34.99
It opens with a mystery (Who is the old man on his deathbed in a hospital in 1939?) and ends with the powerful, colorful first wave of superheroes to populate the Marvel Universe. Almost 11 years ago, Marvel released the hardcover collecting The Marvels Project #1-8, and as one would expect, the work of writer Ed Brubaker and artist Steve Epting has stood the test of time.
Coming off their then-recent collaboration on Captain America, Brubaker and Epting dove deep into the Timely era, the period that led up to America’s involvement in World War II. It captures the epic early battles between the Human Torch and Namor, the Sub-Mariner, the missions of the early costumed crime fighters, and the arrival on the scene of Captain America.
Superbly paced and brilliantly illustrated, this remains a definite must for any serious Marvel fan.
