Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s first feature-length animated film that was released in 1937, has been given a 4K restoration. The updated version will arrive on Disney+ on October 16, 2023, in time for the Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition will be in stores a week earlier on October 10.

Disney shared before and after images that compare the original print with the 4K restoration that shows the crisper, brighter quality of the new version.

According to Disney, the restored version “is the result of the combined efforts of the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, working closely with key artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios.” That team includes artists Michael Giaimo (production designer Frozen) and Eric Goldberg (director Pocahontas), who recently restored Cinderella.

“The opportunity to help restore Snow White was both an honor and a challenge. As the very first Walt Disney feature, Mike Giaimo and I felt we owed a debt to history to get it looking as beautiful, and as accurate to the original colors, as we could,” Goldberg said in a statement. “The muted palette and the delicate watercolor backgrounds evoke the illustrated fairy tales that Walt so loved, and the story and characters continue to resonate to this day. I hope our work inspires future generations of animation artists to fully appreciate the masterful talent and care that has gone into this landmark film.”
