Archie Comics; $11.99

Sonic the Hedgehog first made his debut on Sega consoles in 1991 in the video game that bore his name, and he’s been racing through the pages of comic books almost as long, with the first Sonic comic book having released in November 1992. The latest volume of Sonic Select collects some of the Blue Blur’s best issues of the last few years, and even pairs him up with other Archie characters like Sabrina.

The stories included in this volume are: “Unburying the Hatchet,” “Some Enchantra Evening” parts one and two, “Running on Empty,” and “At All Costs” parts one and two. The book also includes a look at how Sonic’s comic book adventures got started in “Sonic Comic Origins.”

While there’s not much in terms of new content in this book, it actually makes for an excellent starting point for any Sonic the Hedgehog fan who’s been looking to start reading the comics. With so many different Sonic books to choose from – Sonic Boom, Sonic Universe, and Sonic Super Special, to name a few – it can be difficult to find a starting point. But Sonic Selects manages to not only show off some of the highlights from the last few years, but also do so in a way that explores who the characters are without confusing new readers.
